In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 main game plans employed. You want to be able to switch game plans quickly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to barricade in the opponent's pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious difficulty because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent's home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are extremely behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The better places for anchor spots are close to your opponent's smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
