In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 chief strategies employed. You need to be able to hop between strategies almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to lock in your opponent's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time dire straits since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your opponent's home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It should be used when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest locations for anchor spots are close to your competitor's smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: after all, there's no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, taking into account that you don't have other additional checkers to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
