In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three chief tactics employed. You must be able to switch tactics quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to barricade in the competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty seeing that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor's home board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your checkers.) It should be used when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchors are near your opponent's lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: after all, there's no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have other spare checkers to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
