In extraordinarily general terms, there are three main plans used. You must be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to lock in your opponent's pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time calamity since they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent's lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: after all, there's no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your challenger is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have other additional pieces to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
