In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief tactics employed. You need to be able to switch game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in your opponent's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time calamity considering that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more anchors in your opponent's home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better locations for anchor spots are towards your competitor's smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there's no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don't have other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it's more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
