In very simple terms, there are 3 fundamental techniques employed. You must be able to switch techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to block in your competitor's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the game. You can create the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time difficulty because they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent's home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are extremely behind as this plan much improves your chances. The best places for anchor spots are near your opponent's smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for an effective backgame: besides, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your competitor is moving their checkers home, considering that you do not have other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
