In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three basic game plans employed. You need to be agile enough to switch game plans instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can manage, to lock in your opponent's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor's home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least 2 of your checkers.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The best areas for anchor spots are near your competitor's smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: besides, there's no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
