In very general terms, there are three chief plans used. You need to be able to hop between strategies quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to barricade in your opponent's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early 2 and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is then in serious trouble since they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent's home board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are significantly behind as this action much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are close to your opponent's lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, considering that you don't have any other spare pieces to shift! In this situation, it's more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your opposer gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
