In exceptionally general terms, there are three chief game plans used. You want to be agile enough to hop between strategies almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to barricade in the opponent's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the start of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your challenger tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits because they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent's home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are significantly behind as this plan much improves your circumstances. The best places for anchor spots are close to your opponent's lower points and also on adjacent points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: besides, there's no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, because you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it's better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
