In exceptionally general terms, there are 3 basic tactics employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your competitor's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is now in serious difficulty since they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor's home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchors are close to your competitor's smaller points and also on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is essential for a competent backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, taking into account that you do not have any other spare checkers to move! In this case, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
