In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 main game plans employed. You need to be able to hop between techniques instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can manage, to lock in the opponent's pieces that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate strategy at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your challenger is now in serious difficulty considering that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more anchors in your competitor's inner board. (An anchor is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are decidedly behind as this strategy much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchors are near your opponent's lower points and also on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there's no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this right away, while your challenger is getting their pieces home, because you don't have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
