In very simple terms, there are 3 general tactics used. You want to be agile enough to switch tactics instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to lock in the competitor's pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious trouble because they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least 2 of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are decidedly behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchors are towards your competitor's smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: after all, there's no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this right away, while your opposer is moving their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
