In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief game plans employed. You want to be able to hop between strategies quickly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to barricade in your competitor's pieces that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the game. You can build the wall anyplace between your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as quick as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you will be able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your opponent is now in serious calamity seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor's inner board. (An anchor is a position filled by at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be played when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor's smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there's no reason having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
