In exceptionally general terms, there are three chief game plans employed. You need to be able to switch tactics instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can achieve, to barricade in the competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable strategy at the start of the match. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you can play six/one 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time dire straits considering that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better locations for anchor spots are close to your opponent's lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: besides, there's no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your challenger is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have other spare pieces to move! In this case, it's more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to try and get your competitor to get them in this case!
