In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three basic plans employed. You must be able to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves building a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you can manage, to lock in the competitor's pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of closing your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is then in big-time difficulty due to the fact that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at least 2 of your pieces.) It must be played when you are extremely behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchors are near your competitor's smaller points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: besides, there's no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your challenger is shifting their pieces home, because you do not have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it's more tolerable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
