In exceptionally simple terms, there are three chief techniques employed. You must be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your competitor's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable course of action at the begining of the match. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early two and moves one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time difficulty seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor's home board. (An anchor is a point filled by at least two of your checkers.) It should be used when you are extremely behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor's smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is crucial for a competent backgame: after all, there's no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break down this straight away, while your opposer is getting their pieces home, taking into account that you don't have any other additional pieces to move! In this case, it's more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to maintain your position until your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
