In extraordinarily general terms, there are 3 main strategies used. You must be agile enough to switch game plans quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves creating a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in your opponent's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the match. You can build the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your competitor tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time trouble considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor's home board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at least 2 of your pieces.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchors are towards your opponent's smaller points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, because you don't have other additional checkers to shift! In this situation, it's more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it can be a great idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
