In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three general tactics used. You want to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to block in your competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This involves closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. e.g., if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time difficulty because they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher pieces in your competitor's inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest places for anchor spots are close to your opponent's lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your competitor is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don't have any other additional pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position up till your opponent gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
