In extraordinarily general terms, there are three general tactics employed. You want to be able to switch strategies quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to lock in the competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate tactic at the start of the match. You can create the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your two-point and then shift it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your opposer tosses an early two and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious dire straits taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor's inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be played when you are significantly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are towards your opponent's smaller points and either on adjoining points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, because you don't have any other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it's better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your opponent provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a great idea to attempt and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
