In extraordinarily simple terms, there are 3 chief techniques used. You must be able to switch techniques quickly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as thick as you might achieve, to lock in your competitor's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. For example, if your challenger rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is then in big-time trouble seeing that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have two or higher checkers in your opponent's home board. (An anchor spot is a position occupied by at least two of your pieces.) It needs to be used when you are extremely behind as this plan greatly improves your opportunities. The better locations for anchor spots are towards your competitor's lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: besides, there's no point having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your competitor is shifting their pieces home, seeing that you do not have any other extra checkers to move! In this case, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you might maintain your position up until your opposer provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your challenger to get them in this case!
