In very simple terms, there are three fundamental plans used. You must be able to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at a minimum as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your competitor's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anyplace between your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in big-time dire straits because they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more checkers in your opponent's inner board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at least two of your checkers.) It should be played when you are decidedly behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchors are close to your competitor's lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is integral for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, owing to the fact that you do not have other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can preserve your position until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
