In astonishingly general terms, there are three chief strategies employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between techniques quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you can achieve, to lock in your opponent's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the match. You can create the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your two-point and then move it into your home board as the game advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your 1-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time calamity because they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor's home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It must be employed when you are decidedly behind as this strategy greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest locations for anchor spots are towards your competitor's smaller points and either on abutting points or with one point in between. Timing is important for a competent backgame: after all, there is no reason having 2 nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, considering that you don't have any other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it's more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a good idea to attempt and get your opposer to get them in this case!
