In extraordinarily general terms, there are three chief tactics used. You must be agile enough to hop between techniques instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of assembling a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you might manage, to block in the competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere between your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious difficulty since they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor's home board. (An anchor spot is a point filled by at least two of your checkers.) It should be played when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchors are towards your competitor's lower points and either on abutting points or with a single point separating them. Timing is essential for a powerful backgame: after all, there's no point having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up till your challenger provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to hit them in this case!
