In extraordinarily simple terms, there are three fundamental techniques used. You must be able to hop between tactics almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as thick as you are able to manage, to lock in the opponent's pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable tactic at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your two-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quickly as possible while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you will be able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is then in big-time difficulty since they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or more pieces in your competitor's home board. (An anchor spot is a point occupied by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be used when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The best areas for anchors are close to your opponent's lower points and either on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is crucial for a powerful backgame: besides, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this right away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your challenger gives you an opportunity to hit, so it can be an excellent idea to attempt and get your challenger to hit them in this situation!
