In very simple terms, there are 3 fundamental plans employed. You must be able to hop between techniques almost instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might achieve, to block in the competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opponent rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your 3-point and you then roll a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in serious calamity due to the fact that they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent's home board. (An anchor spot is a point consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It must be employed when you are significantly behind as it much improves your opportunities. The better areas for anchor spots are near your competitor's smaller points and either on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is important for a powerful backgame: at the end of the day, there is no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break down this straight away, while your opposer is moving their checkers home, taking into account that you don't have any other extra pieces to shift! In this situation, it's better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it may be an excellent idea to try and get your competitor to hit them in this case!
