In astonishingly simple terms, there are three general techniques used. You want to be able to hop between game plans almost instantly as the course of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to lock in your opponent's checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one eight/three eight/three. Your challenger is now in serious dire straits since they have two pieces on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher anchors in your competitor's inner board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your pieces.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The strongest locations for anchors are towards your opponent's lower points and either on adjacent points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effectual backgame: besides, there's no point having two nice anchors and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, because you don't have any other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position up until your competitor gives you a chance to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this case!
