In exceptionally general terms, there are three main techniques employed. You want to be able to switch techniques quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to achieve, to barricade in your competitor's checkers that are on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most suitable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of locking your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your challenger on the bar. e.g., if your opposer tosses an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then toss a 5-5, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three eight/three. Your opposer is now in big-time trouble since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or more pieces in your opponent's home board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum two of your checkers.) It needs to be played when you are extremely behind as this action greatly improves your circumstances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor's lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: besides, there's no reason having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this straight away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, seeing that you don't have other extra checkers to shift! In this situation, it's more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can maintain your position up till your challenger provides you an opportunity to hit, so it can be a wonderful idea to try and get your opponent to get them in this situation!
